🌟My USMLE Step 1 Journey – Reflecting on the Beginning🌟

I often get asked: Why did you choose medicine? For me, the answer goes back to when I was just 6 years old. Even back then, I played the "doctor" role in school dramas — it felt like more than play; it felt like purpose. Over time, that passion only grew stronger.

After moving to the UK and completing my master's degree, I had never imagined myself taking the US path. But life took a beautiful turn — after deciding to marry and settle in the U.S., I found myself at a crossroads. I wanted to get back to what I loved most: medicine. That’s when the idea of USMLE came into the picture.

Before Starting Step 1 Prep:

📚 Academic Strengths & Weaknesses

I was always academically inclined during my medical school years — truly passionate about every subject. On a scale of 1 to 10, I’d say I had an 8 in most disciplines. However, there was a 2–3 year gap post-graduation which made it a bit difficult to restart. But that foundational strength really helped once I got going.

Initial Time Allocation

I didn’t set a strict timeline. My only plan was consistency — at least one block (40 questions) a day. Initially, I could only manage 10–15 questions daily, but I focused on understanding the concepts. Over time, that grew — eventually I was doing 6–7 blocks a day.

🎯 Step 1 Goals

My ultimate goal was clear: pass Step 1. But I also knew I needed structure. I watched multiple videos on how to prepare, then created a system-based study plan: 1 week per system with videos, followed by First Aid, then questions. I broke it down step by step. Some of the most helpful resources for me included:

Mehlman Medical’s YouTube Channel — incredibly clear and high-yield breakdowns

NBME Concept Review by HyGuru Prep — a must before self-assessments

Biostatistics Concepts Simplified — this video helped reinforce tricky areas

📈 Baseline Assessment?

I didn’t take any NBME at the very beginning — I knew I had a gap and wanted to build a strong base first. After completing video lectures and a full round of UWorld, I then took NBME forms and self-assessments. Scoring a 75% gave me the confidence to book my exam.

Pursuing USMLE has meant more than just a career step — it's been a personal milestone. From uncertainty to discipline, from restarting after a gap to staying committed every day, it's been a journey I’m proud of.

If you're just starting out, don’t be afraid to take the first step. One question at a time, one concept at a time — you’ll get there. 💪
